New Jersey Style Cheesesteak

Inspired by Donkey’s Place Steaks, the original New Jersey style cheesesteak mecca, it truly is worth it sometimes to venture outside of the comfort zone. It’s amazing!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 Large Yellow Onions, diced fine
  • Pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pound of thinly sliced high-quality Ribeye
  • 4 slices Yellow American Cheese (or optionally White American Cheese)
  • 4 Soft Poppy Seed Kaiser Rolls, Toasted (Ideally from the local bakery)

Assembly

  1. Heat a large cooking vessel and add a tablespoon of canola oil and heat it until it just before it starts smoking.
  2. Brown onions in the pan with a pinch of pepper, about 10 minutes.
  3. Add Worcestershire sauce and cook until the liquid boils and it starts bubbling (around 1 minute).
  4. Add ribeye right on top of the onions and chop and flip the meat until there’s no more pink (3-5 minutes).
  5. Put white American slices right on top of the meat and onion, and cook until the cheese starts to melt. Once melted, scoop onto a toasted Poppy Seed Kaiser toll.

(I love to add hot peppers to this sandwich. You can do this either by buying your own deli hot peppers, or use traditional hoagie spread, like I do.)
